 The AI Value Gap

This week we published our annual State of Enterprise AI Report, with a specific focus this year on the value companies are (or are not) generating from AI.

An interesting finding in this year’s report is the different experiences companies are having with AI. To understand these differences, we grouped responding organizations into archetypes based on the value they are achieving, along with the friction they are encountering as they generate that value.

  • Value Seekers are using AI but have yet to translate it into meaningful business value. Only 16% of Seekers believe AI investment has been worthwhile, and achieving an acceptable ROI is the leading value-realization challenge for this group.
  • Value Warriors are generating value from AI but are encountering significant friction as they push it deeper into the enterprise. While over 60% of Warriors believe AI investment has been worthwhile, more than two-thirds say the time saved by AI has been offset by the new oversight burden, and they are struggling with AI-related skills and a growing talent gap.
  • Value Realizers are seeing the most value compared to the other two archetypes, with 85% saying their AI investment has been worthwhile. However, the greatest challenge for Realizers is ensuring data quality and availability – two of the most critical aspects of any AI deployment.

The net result here is that there is no linear path to generating value from AI. Each archetype – and each company – is experiencing AI differently depending on factors like the quality of their data, the complexity of their architecture, and the readiness of their workforce.

We’ve identified a set of recommendations for each archetype to generate more value from AI investments, so I encourage you to download and share the report with your colleagues.

And after you’re done reading, make sure to register for the ISG AI Impact Summit on October 28 in New York City. It’s a fantastic event, and we hope to see you there.
