IT Dominates Functional Use Cases
A few horizontal offerings and industry-specific value chains are leading the agentic AI market. Among functional-specific applications of agentic AI, over half are found in IT, while marketing, sales and finance each account for only about 10%. And within IT use cases, DevOps is the number one use case so far.
Comparing Early Generative & Agentic AI Industry Use Cases
For providers in our study, 70% of use cases/proofs-of-concept (POCs) in agentic AI came from one of three industries: BFSI, retail or manufacturing. This demonstrates how providers are focusing narrowly, looking for unique intersections of internal capabilities and high ROI potential for their agentic AI investments. This is a difference from early generative AI use cases, wherein providers experimented across nearly all industries.
In the age of agents, will we need applications?
Agentic AI has the potential to completely change how we access data. In most cases, the value of an app is that it adds context to raw data, a lot of times via black box semantic logic that only exists inside that application. With agents, we could directly access data without the need for an app.
